Postdoc and PhD-Student POSITION In a DFG-funded project (3 years), we offer positions as either as Postdoc (BAT 2a) or a PhD student (BAT 2a/2) concerned with the unravelling of excitatory and inhibitory microcircuits in a basic module of the cortex, i.e. the cortical column. For this exciting endeavour, we use flash photolysis of caged-glutamate in slices of rat barrel cortex in combination with whole cell-recording and subsequent 3-dimensional quantitative reconstruction of the neurons (Schubert et al.; J. Neurosci. (2001, 21:3580-3592; 2003, 23:2961-2970; Cerebral Cortex 2006, 16:223-236). In cooperation with the group of Prof. Michael Frotscher we will start a parallel project on reeler mice, in order to investigate sensory processing in a highly disorganized cortex. Candidates should have a background in electrophysiology (patch clamping in slices) and a strong enthusiasm for neuroscience.
